EXTREME GAMES GET EXTREMELY DEADLY

June 5, 2002 02:21 PM

When Death Valley hosted this year’s Extreme Games they weren't prepared for what happened. It is customary for the games to pre-order a hundred or so ambulances and on-sight surgeons. However, what the organizers of this year's event didn't take into consideration was the introduction of the exhibition game "Cocaine SmackDown".

"Cocaine SmackDown" is the newest trend in extreme gaming. CSD is simple: a young atheltic teenager is given a gram of cocaine and then put in an enclosed ring with a senior citizen (must be 70 years of age or older) who is not on cocaine. They are both given hard-rubber batons and goggles. The object is to beat the other into submission. The quickest to do so wins. If there is no winner after the first two minutes then a second teenager is introduced who becomes team-mates with the other teenager. At this point the game moves along very quickly often ending in serious injury and death.

Most of the senior citizen contestants were beaten to a bloody pulp early on. An unforeseen result of the event was that once the senior had been beaten down the two teenagers would invariably turn on each other and beat one another senseless to the death.

Approximately 50 seniors were beaten to death during the fixtures; 20 teenagers died. During the closing ceremonies the mostly youthful audience became aggressive towards the seniors. Out-numbering them 4-1, Death Valley truly did become "death-like...a German soccer riot ain't [sic] got nothing on us.", commented an anonymous teenager.

The organizers of the Extreme Games are contemplating pulling the "Cocaine SmackDown" portion out of next year's games.
